about
(taken from the interview with The Garrison in Shock&Awe! Issue#05)
Pertaining to the word “subversion” (name of The Garrison’s EP); do you guys often associate yourself with the so-called subversive action that is happening in your surroundings?
We weren’t directly involved, only indirectly. The term subversion to us doesn’t necessarily mean you go on a certain action to puncture the government or smash the state. It is more about the notion of wherever you go in this country, you got to first nullify whatever the community-at-large swallow from the existing sickening system, then counter it with your own evil imaginative way. Take for example, some of us went around the city tagging and ‘bombing’ graffiti, although we weren’t from the graffiti community and weren’t artistic enough to be considered one, which suits us fine because we don’t really care. At the same time, we would be happy to be “the upsetters”, which meant making sure shitty rich people don’t roam around with a smile on their faces. For example, if you happen to be in the way of a VIP car being escorted by the police and they ask you to move aside (a common thing here in Malaysia), you could pretend that your car broke down so they can’t move that fast, so they gotta learn to queue up just like everyone else.
I would like to hack some authorities’ websites ala Anonymous but I’m bad at computers so that’s one option gone. We believe in going to rallies but to us, the most important thing is the idea of having subversive elements that don’t constitute or limited to just attacking the state through rally, protest and rioting but to get into other extreme alternative means, like, I’ve read somewhere that someone stole the patrol car and park it somewhere else - you could do that during protests though, it would be magnificent.
